Week of 10/30
Kelso C-7: Weekly Calendar + Board of Education + New Phase It's a short–but fun–week for our Falcons! Check out the events listed on the weekly calendar below. The Kelso C-7 Board of Education will also meet tonight at 6:00 pm in the school library for a public hearing, with a regular meeting to follow. The communities and countryside of Kelso and New Hamburg are experiencing growth, and our school is also following suit–in leaps and bounds. Our enrollment is currently at 211 students in grades preschool through eighth. Our District Leadership team has held numerous intentional and in-depth conversations about what makes Kelso C-7 unique and successful. In addition to many other attributes, small class sizes and low teacher-to- student ratio has been identified as a strong factor. We believe in order to continue and ensure this attribute, additional classroom space is needed. We also believe this is needed sooner rather than later. At tonight’s public hearing with the Kelso C-7 Board of Education, there will be discussion and then action taken for the next phase of construction. When we first built the new school, we always publicly stated there would be three phases of growth; we designed the building to prepare for that. It seems Phase III is now upon us. This would include two additional classrooms located at the east side of the building, additional bleacher space in the gym, and a sound system in the gym. This phase is financed initially by a lease purchase. This is similar to home loans we use in our own homes. It is our hope the lease purchase would then be paid off with a NO TAX increase in April 2024. Why are we doing a lease purchase instead of a traditional bond issue? This classroom space is needed as soon as possible. The estimated completion date is Summer 2024. The classrooms will not be completed if we wait for the April bond issue. Without a successful bond issue, the addition will be paid for out of the general operating funds. The public hearing tonight is to take action on the Lease Purchase. We invite any and all community members to attend, ask questions, and hear about the next developments for our school at tonight’s 6 pm meeting.

Dear Kelso C-7 Families, Today our school participated in the “Great Shake Out,” an international earthquake drill. Preparedness for any emergency is essential. Living on a fault line it is essential to be prepared. Kelso C-7 students were ready for the challenge! They were ready and quickly moved into action! We are extremely proud of our team! We are passing along a resource from the Great Shake Out. It has some good information and links to additional resources for your family to help prepare for an earthquake. Check out the link below! https://www.shakeout.org/ Best regards, Kimberly Burger Superintendent

Tardy: Good morning Kelso C-7 families, We are seeing an uptick in students who are tardy for school. We understand that life happens every once in a while. If a student arrives after 7:55 am, please park and bring your child in so that you can sign your child in. When we have repeated tardies, it becomes a problem for students. When students enter the room after class starts, it creates a distraction and is not fair to the other students or teacher. The Student/Parent Handbook outlines the consequences for tardies. As we are wrapping up the first quarter and settling into a routine, hopefully this will be resolved. Thank you for your help!

Middle School Math Update Mrs. Julie Hahs has decided to not return to Kelso C-7 for the upcoming school year. Mrs. Hahs technically retired last year, but returned to our district to serve in a "critical shortage position." Our students, staff, and community have been very blessed by her service to Kelso C-7. She will be greatly missed and we truly wish her well. Kelso C-7 is welcoming Miss Abby Gray. Miss Gray will be a student teacher this Fall with our Falcons. She is finishing up her Middle School Math Education degree at SEMO and has jumped right in like a pro to start working with our faculty and staff this week. Miss Gray will be leading math classes for grades 5-8, 8th grade writing and grammar, and serve as the 8th grade homeroom teacher. We are excited to have her join our team! Mrs. Karen Burger will be returning to serve as Miss Gray's cooperating teacher. A tried and true math teacher, Mrs. Burger brings years of successful math education experience to help Miss Gray as a content specialists through her student teaching. We couldn't ask for a better match for Miss Gray's learning experience. Mrs. Penny Hale will be the 7th grade homeroom teacher moving forward. A big shoutout to Mrs. Hale as well for serving as a mentor teacher to Miss Gray, helping her learn all things Kelso C-7. We are so grateful for everyone who helped during the transition and all of our team members that have been working so hard to make this year the best yet! Stop by and see our new and returning team members during Back to School Night!!
